Perfect 10,000
Gete Wami, the 10,000- meter bronze medalist at the 1996 Atlanta Games, won the 1999 world title in a time of 30 minutes, 24.56 seconds -- a World Championships record. Wami's victory in the 10,000 came two years after she missed the 1997 final with a pulled muscle in her right thigh.

Trip to school measured in feet
Similar to the backgrounds of several other Ethiopian runners, Wami started running as a child as a means of transportation to and from school. The 2000 Sydney Games would be her second Olympics -- after which she plans to concentrate her training on marathons.

1995:International debut at the senior level came at the 10,000 at the World championships held in Gottenberg Sweden. She finished 18th, well behind Fernanda Reiberio and Derartu Tulu who finished 1st and 2nd.

1996:A year later at the Olympic Games Gete Wami beat Derartu to the bronze medal a remarkable improvement in a year. That same year Gete had won the World Cross Country title after Derartu lost her shoe in the race.

1997: Should have been Wami's crowning year in the 10,000 but she pulled a muscle with a few laps to go and did not finish the 10,000 meters race.

1998:Won the World Cross Country challenge and broke the Ethiopian records in the 3,000 and 5,000. Improved her 1,500 by 6 seconds.

1999:Gete more than made up for her loss in Athens, in '97, by winning the 10,000 meters in Seville and setting a National and African record.

2000:Lost the Ethiopian and World Cross Country title to Derartu Tulu. Raced sparingly so far and set a National and African Record at 5,000
