Africans dominate men's 5000m heats

In the cut and thrust of the 5000m heats the dominance of the Africans was evident, with Moroccan, Ethiopian, Kenyan and Algerian athletes omnipresent.

In the first heat the pace was ponderous, although German Jirka Arndt did try to push things along. The 3km mark was passed in 8:10.97. The speed was lifted at that point. By the bell lap nine athletes were in contention for the six automatic places in the final. Moroccan Brahim Lahlafi piloted the field around the last lap in 56.57. The other five automatic spots went to his African colleagues: two Ethiopians, two Kenyans and an Algerian.

Arndt was also rewarded, nabbing one of the three non-automatic spots up for grabs.
