Somali Bantu refugees
The term Somali Bantu refugees refers to a program of the US Department of State
to bring approx. 12,000 Somali Bantu people to the United States of America by
2003. The Somali Bantu are descended from African slaves taken from Tanzania and
Mozambique, mostly Tanzania, to southern Somalia during the 19th century by Arab
traders and forced to work on Somali owned plantations. After slavery in Somalia
ended in the early 20th century, and even forced labour by Italian colonialists,
the situation of the Somali Bantu got drasticly worse with the outbreak of civil
war in the early 90s.
In 2000 the United States classified the Bantus as a priority and began
preparations for resettlement to select cities throughout the United States,
among those it is known that Salt Lake City, Utah received about 1,000 of the
refugees. Other cities in the Southwest, such as Denver, Colorado, and Tucson,
Arizona, received a few thousand as well. Plans to resettle the Bantu in smaller
towns, such as Holyoke, Mass., and Cayce, S.C., were scrapped after local
protest. The resettlement patterns are in contrast to regular Somalis, who are
concentrated in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area and Columbus, Ohio, with a few in
Maine.
