Immediate Press Release
ETHIOTRANS SUPPORTS 100
WORLD LANGUAGES.
July 10, 2004:
San Diego,
California,
USA:
Ethiotrans, a San Diego, CA based Localization and Translation Company
announced that today it will support 100 world languages for its clients
word wide. In 1999 Yebbo Communication Networks was offering free
translation service for its web site visitors and suddenly the
demand was raising dramatically. Soon the Ethiotrans founder combined his
localization software engineering skill and his native language experience
together, and he started Ethiotrans.com He said "The
African languages are left behind to participate in the 21st
century" and in Feb 2002 he started to offer his own native language
"Amharic" and added Oromo, Somali and Tigrinya and lunched Ethiotrans.com.
He said "I want to start from what have inside information. That is my
own language" then he expanded his language support to the East African
languages (Dinka. Nuer, Swahili, and Ibo) after that every day the request
was flowing from all over the word and the language list was star growing
fast.
The big challenge was finding the right person for the right
project and finding the right tool to the right assignment. This was because
of lack of networking and lack of technology support. For example, not
having a reliable internet access in most African countries and not having
enough software applications support for African languages was a headache.
Also most software applications are not enabled to support UNICODE that was
bottleneck to use this application for the Desk Top Publishing environment.
Such best examples are, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Quark Express
were/are some of the best examples who did not support UNICODE. But thank
you for friends, relatives, coworkers' newsgroups and fellow translators
support, Ethiotrans was managed to tackle lots of obstacles and solve lost
of issues. Ethiotrans passed a very challenging road. There were several
occurrences where the client refused to pay but Ethiotrans had to pay for
our translators from our pocket, there were few times where one translator
did bad job and another translator had to be hired because of poor quality,
and Ethiotrans was loosing lots of money. But that was to proof our company
is dedicated to provide a quality job. There were several moments where
software applications did not support most African languages and we had to
bump our head to the wall to bring something from the impossible for our
clients. Even the clients did not understand what was going on. In the
contrary, there were several shining moments for Ethiotrans, that is why we
are still in business.
Ethiotrans helped several companies, organizations,
individuals, and businesses all over the world. We resolved conflicts, we
saved lives; we produced a product that will change people's life. We've
received calls from al over the word for various reasons. From helping
people to name their pets, to helping researchers to find the origin of a
manuscript, our service goes beyond our expectation. Ethiotrans helped us
to see the power of language! We believe there is a direct relationship
between language and life. For us language is a key to survive. It is life!
Now our confident level is high! We have lost of returning
clients; they are satisfied with our professional quality oriented work. We
proofed ourselves we can produce something from nothing. Now we see lots of
bright moments ahead of us. Now even companies like Microsoft understands
the importance of technology to African people and we see there is a direct
correlation between language (our localization department) and technology
and we hope all the obstacles we had in the past will be a distance away. We
hope lots of software companies will add African language support to their
product. Also we see companies, organizations; government offices will add
the African language part of their language support near the future
Today we are celebrating a big milestone to our company,
which is expanding our language support beyond African languages; today as
of July 9, 2004 we
are supporting 100 languages. This will not change our primary focus,
which is Focusing on African Languages; however it will create a new
power and marketing opportunities for translation agencies and translation
processionals to add African language support part of their language list.
We will support 100 languages by hiring independent contactors (language
professionals) or by partnering with other translation agencies. This is a
big chapter to our company. In our translators pool we have translation
professionals from all over the world, not only they are all over the world
but also they have diverse experience, skill and education. We have
engineers, medical doctors, teachers, students, economists, artists,
cultural consultants and so many others. Since there is a direct
correlation between language and culture we took this relationship
seriously. For example in order to have an accurate and culturally fit
translation we have several native translators. We respect a talent of
people who can speak and translate more than one language, but most of the
time we assign a project for the native speaker. This will insure
to have the highest
quality and culturally acceptable translation.

San
Diego, CA. August 20, 2003. EthioTrans, a
San Diego based Translation
and Localization Company (focusing on African languages), announced that it will
use part of its resource to promote the
Health Education in African Languages.
According to EthioTrans founder Amde Mitiku, “… in order to have a clear and
accurate information transfer between the sender and the receiver, the
translation must accurately reflect the intended message. When it comes to the
Health Education, we are dealing with saving millions of lives every
year. Having appropriate Health Education in the targeted
audience’s language will save lives each year. The lack of Health Education
in African Languages has been part of the main reason for millions of deaths
in
Africa and other parts of the world. With the help of health
organizations, religious groups, NGOs, community organizations, government and
public sectors as well as individual help, we can tackle this epidemic by
translating health education materials into most African popular languages…
”
EthioTrans has
translated some educational materials for medical groups and organizations. But
there is a huge gap between African language Health Education and other
languages. In many African nations, Africans are expected to know how to read
and write in English in order to understand Health Education materials. But for
most Africans, English is their second language and it takes a long time before
they understand what the message is.
Today, few health
organizations think about the importance of African Language based Health
Education. Some of them think health education materials targeting
Africa-Americans will cover Africans too. Africans and African-Americans may
share the same disease but the level of understanding of English written
documents is quite different.
These are some of most
commonly spoken languages in Africa:
Africana, Amharic, Arabic, Somali, Swahili, Tigrigna, Oromo, Lingala, Ibo, Nuer,
Dinka and several others.
