Brief Bio: 1991:
Ethiopias first womens athletics star came on the scene in 1991 winning the heat at the World Championships. Finished 8th in the final. 1992:At the start of the 1992 10,000 final the 'experts' on NBC sized up the competition and designated the favorites as
South African Elena Meyer and Liz Mccoglan of GBR. But it was Tulu Vs Meyer with one lap to go. Meyer's face was straigned and Derartu Tulu went for the kill a 64 second last
lap turned her into a legend. 1993:
Derartu Tulu knee injury sidelines Derartu through the year. 1995:Wins the Cross country title even though she arrived at
the venue 1 hour before the race. Won silver at the world championships behind Fernanda Rebiero (POR). 1996:At the World Cross Country Championships in South
Africa Derartu lost her shoe in the midde of the race but came back to finish 4th. Finished a dissappointing 4th at the Olympic games. 1997:Won her second World Cross Country Champion Title and run her First Marathon at Boston running 2:30 and said
she felt great while running the marathon. 1998 & 1999:
Took most of the time off to give birth to a daughter but started her comeback in 1999. Running road races. 2000:Run 2:26 at the London Marathon, won the World Cross Country Title for a third time and improved her 5,000
and 10,000 times significantly (5 seconds and 10 seconds) |
