Tilish, I am thankful!
As a young man in his early twenties I was not that lucky
to enjoy most of breathtaking stage performances of Tilish. I can remember very few concerts
such Kebir Le Ethiopia at Meskel Square where Tilish made a surprising
entrance and magnificent performance. However small my chances were to see
him live, his songs, every single of the very few hundreds I heard, were joy
to listen, wisdom to capture and more than anything a bridge to link myself
with my nation.

Tilish, I am thankful!
As a young man in his early twenties I was not that lucky
to enjoy most of breathtaking stage performances of Tilish. I can remember very few concerts
such Kebir Le Ethiopia at Meskel Square where Tilish made a surprising
entrance and magnificent performance. However small my chances were to see
him live, his songs, every single of the very few hundreds I heard, were joy
to listen, wisdom to capture and more than anything a bridge to link myself
with my nation.
Among very few things I cherish in my life and from random
toughts of my country, Tilahun’s songs and the memories that tied with them
is amongst the first things I treasure most. I thank u sir, May God Bless you
and takes you in to his heaven.

You must feel sad as all families do. Tilahun Gessese offended a lot of people
when other well known and respected singers refrained from singing the Derg's
praises. I don't want to make you feel
bad at this time but this is the truth.
He sung the praises of a regime that massacred a lot of
Ethiopians. He did not lift one finger
during that whole time to address any of the injustices that were easy to
see. So in a way he has gone to a
higher justice. Its funny the Emperor
made him who he is. Unless you and he
deny that too. Yet he laughed, sang
and feted the very people who murdered this father of a nation. And now after 17 years of betrayal this is
how he seeks to be remembered. How can

You are a grieving family and his sin is not yours, but you

“How can one explain the
very person of Dr. Tilahun Gessesse as an artist? Please allow me in trying
to gather words together to make any sibilance of my thoughts to be able to
express my feelings to his family. Indeed, it goes without saying that he was
an icon and a giant, most of all unequal of his generation. He was the
definition of our growing up and most of all, being our teacher of the very
essence and meaning of love, sorrow, the melancholy feeling of what is
churning in our soul. A day never has past, when I did not listen to his
soothing songs, which has kept me so connected with my country, despite the
long time I have passed in out of my country. I cannot say more enough, how I
was sadden by the news of sudden passing so soon. It is my sincere wish and I
prayer his family will have the strength and keep his legacy alive. May God
accept his soul.

“Dear Family Members of
our beloved Dr.Artist Tilahun Gessesse,
For more than half a century He was living with
us. I grew up listening his beautiful voices Tilahun was
the page of our History and he will remain so for the generations to
come. The history of modern Ethiopia is incomplete without the great artistic
works of Tilahun.He was an ardent nationalist who had been participated in
all battle fronts “Enqwans Behiwot Eyalehu Bequme
Le Hagre Nestanet Yemuagetal Atsme” was one of his great
musical work that helped Ethiopian army
as an engine of morale to drove
out expansionist in Ogaden. As he did express in his music Yemuagetal Astme
he did brought Ethiopians together to work for unity and peace. I have no
words that sufficiently express the weight of his contribution to his country
and fellow citizens. Even in his death he brought us as one people. He brought the government
and people of Ethiopia together. The state funeral by itself was an
indication of this oneness.
Death took away
Tilahun from the stage but not
from the hearts of millions of Ethiopians. Tilahun is living in the hearts of
all,he will continue to live with us
as one of the legendary hero of our time. I believe his name will always remain alive
through his innumerable and soul touching works.
Let me share the
grieve of his loss with you, the loved ones of Dr. Tilahun, Let The Almighty
rest his soul in Heaven and give you strength.

“The last few days have
been some of the saddest days of my life! i have considered Tilahun Gessese
to be a big part of my Ethiopia, my family, my culture, my art, my
life...since i was a little girl. I have been singing along with him, every
time he is on TV, Radio... ever since i remember...
i have quoted his songs in my arguments with friends and
used them at times when i was not able to express my feelings well... He was
there, with me through the ups and downs from childhood to youth...
"Yasebekute tesaka..." was the song that i sang alone when i passed
ESLCE and "Meleyayet..." was the song that me and my friends sang
together when we graduated from college... he has always been part of my
world and will always be!!!
But I guess it never crossed my mind that Tilahun would
leave us too and it was a fact of life, because for me he was beyond the fact
of life and i didn't stop and think... even once, to view him in that regard.
Though i admit that that was weak of me not to do so!
I feel like a part of me has died the last few days and so
do many many other Ethiopians! I can only begin to imagine how his family
must be feeling right now!
May his soul rest in peace!
May the Almighty GOD be with u to help you through these
very hard times!
